PUNK NIGHT at Carnegies - December 1999.
We got a phone call from Ben at Carnegies,
inquiring if we wanted to perform at a 'Rock Night' in Carnegies.
We naturally agreed.
To our shock and horror, the night
was being advertised as a Punk Night.

We decided that the only way to go was to be punks that night and the 'F*CKOMETER' exceeded even the Bastards record.

High Notes - Article on Sisters by Vivian Tse. 2 July 1999 issue

The members of the group Sisters of Sharon are quick to describe themselves as being "a bit mad." While this may seem at least partially true, their offbeat ways - and an abundance of talent - have made them Hong Kong's most successful and popular female band. Hong Kong native Chris Bowers and British-born Kim Falkingham and Jill Eason have been together for eight years, with drummers coming and going during this time. Drummers, apparently, have a "habit of stool-hopping." Emma Featherstone, hailing from New Zealand, joined the Sisters one-and-a-half years ago: "I found some musicians to support me," she says. And the name? "We decided we liked the concept of a family unit," Bowers says, "but it all got a bit drunken. We're lucky we didn't end up as 'Friends of Fanny' or something like that. But we do try and play up the 'Sharon' concept." (Bowers admits that people of American extraction are often unfamiliar with the connotations of the name Sharon, or "Shazza" for short. For those not in the know, a "Sharon" is usually a loud, rather common woman).

The band's music is danceable original pop rock and grunge - a marriage of the differing tastes of the band's four members. "Not all the songs we write are personal," says Falkingham, who, along with Bowers, pens the lyrics and creates the music. "What we are is about having a good time.

We're rather like-minded individuals who can do all sorts of projects." Individuality among the group is reflected in their style of dress. Bowers' plastic fantastic garb from Fetish Fashion has given audience members just cause to label her as raunchy. "I wear anything that shows off my tattoos," she says. "My outfits are chosen depending on the season - PVC trousers in the winter and PVC dresses and tops in the summer." Falkington is a self-proclaimed rock chick: "Style changes with me. I'm kinda wild, but I have character." Bassist Eason says she's more in the background and therefore doesn't need to dress up all the time. Bowers interjects: "What about those revealing tops?" Featherstone, for obvious reasons, dresses comfortably. Jeans, T-shirts and steel-capped boots are her usual, practical attire.

The Sisters play at various venues all over town, but you can usually catch them at the Fringe Club. "How we act on stage depends how wild the audience is," say Bowers. From hippies in San Francisco to 8,000 people at the Coliseum, the Sisters of Sharon, with their copious amounts of energy, know how to put on a show. "It usually takes the audience a while to warm up," says Falkingham, "but by the end of the night, they can get pretty crazy." With international exposure and two albums under their belt, the self-managed foursome scored themselves a recording deal with Soy Sauce Records and are currently working hard in the studio putting together their third album, due to be released at the end of the year.
